There is a revolution afoot!  Get on the covered wagon with Finisia Medrona as she works to re-wild the Sacred Native American food hoop our ancestors depended on for food in the Northwest.  Our ancestors traveled with the seasons, gathered Camas, Breadroot, and other plants, careful not to take too much, and thanking Spirit for abundance, so their children would never hunger.  "Civilization" has plowed under and paved over the majority of these early staples.

The average US meal travels 1500 miles to get to your plate.  Think global climate imbalance and resource wars.  A "locovore" diet is healthier for you and the planet.  The processes of refrigeration, transporting, over-tilling, -watering, and -fertilizing produce copious greenhouse-trapping gasses.  We are eating food without soul--produced in mass volume, heedless of nutritional value, spirit, or care for the next generations.

The solution is in boxes delivered by your local community Supported Agriculture, at the farmers market, and in your own backyard.  A "low carbon" diet travels 17 to 66 times fewer miles than the typical non-local diet.  There is a movement to proliferate 2'x2' garden beds and food growing education among urban folks who have limited access to fresh vegetables.  Food-Not-Lawns is working hard to turn Rhododendrons into Rutabagas.  It takes surprisingly little space and time to grow enough food to impact our environmental footprint, our health, our sense of well-being and self-sufficiency.  

Re-visioning our diet can help heal the Earth, thwart global warming and resource wars.  Reinventing the way we eat is really about remembering our ancestral heritage, and using common sense, permaculture and mutual support to provide for each other's food needs.  Maybe it's time we reevaluate what we consider comfort foods.  (Barbara Dickinson, 2008)

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten  turkeys.  When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put  money into the research wanted a pay-back so they put their  heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. 

It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter.  How do you like it?  They have come out with some clever new flavorings...DO YOU KNOW...The difference between margarine and butter? Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine. 
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. 
Eating 
butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in  other foods.  Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added! (therefore questionable as to absorption)
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavor of other foods. 
Butter  has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life (it's been 25-30 years now) and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance)...uhhh...hydrogen...is that the stuff they make bombs out of?   

You  can try this yourself: 
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area.  Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things: 
 *  no flies, not ev
en those pesky fruit flies will go near it  (that should tell you something) 
 *  it does not rot or smell differently because it has 
 no nutritional value (no enzymes either); nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic.  Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?   

Pass the BUTTER PLEASE...remember, butter is a food,

And Now It's Tainted with Salmonella

FDA announces a recall of an acronym – HVP, or "hydrolyzed vegetable protein" – found in soups, sauces, chilis, stews, hot dogs, gravies, snack foods, dips and dressings. It could lead to the largest food recall in U.S. history.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of millions of pounds of a product you've never heard of, made by a company you've never heard of, that's in a lot of foods you have not only heard of, but most certainly eaten. It's made by Basic Food Flavors Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada and it's called HVP. (No, it's not the STD.) HVP is short for hydrolyzed vegetable protein, a ubiquitous food-like substance found in just about every category of processed foods available in American supermarkets.

Already dozens of those processed foods have been recalled, and you can expect many more. The Washington Post and others predict this could lead to the biggest food recall in U.S. history.

Even so, the FDA and other federal agencies are counting the discovery of salmonella – typically found in feces, not food – in the product as a success because they think a customer of Basic Food Flavors blew the whistle on the contamination before it caused anyone to get sick. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Even healthy people don't have fun consuming it... unless fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are your idea of a good time. The risk of widespread illness from this recall is considered low because both subsequent food makers and consumers typically heat these foods to a high enough temperature that the salmonella is killed.

If the FDA's optimism proves true, then ... Good job, food regulators. But the incident opens a window on the industrialized food system and how easily it can sicken us, rather than nourish us.

HVP is used as a "flavor enhancer" in just about every processed food on the market: soups, sauces, chilis, stews, hot dogs, gravies, seasoned snack foods, dips and dressings.

According to Wikipedia, HVP is:

produced by boiling cereals or legumes, such as soy, corn, or wheat, in hydrochloric acid and then neutralizing the solution with sodium hydroxide. The acid hydrolyzes, or breaks down, the protein in vegetables into their component amino acids. The resulting dark coloured liquid contains, among other amino acids, glutamic acid, which consumers are more familiar with in the form of its sodium salt, monosodium glutamate, or MSG. It is used as a flavor enhancer in many processed foods, and known to cause violent reactions in many people, as well as being a carcinogen.

That's what they talk about when they talk about industrialized food. When's the last time you boiled your veggies in hydrochloric acid (also used to make PVC) before cooking up a nice soup? The great thing about using lye (sodium hydroxide) as a finishing agent, is that you can keep extra on hand for making chemical drain cleaner. Yum.

This one company is supplying that product to multiple food manufacturers (just listen to that phrase, "food manufacturers"; it doesn't sound like a farm, does it?). Multiple manufacturers produce foods (or food-like substances, as Michael Pollan calls these processed foods) that are stocked around the country. When contamination in such a base ingredient occurs, the result can easily be contamination of entire shelves' worth of grocery store items. And many people becoming ill.

If hazelnuts are recalled, you can know to avoid hazelnuts. When HVP is recalled, you'd have to avoid just about any processed, packaged food to avoid it. (Which isn't such a bad idea, for your health or the health of the environment.)

"This situation clearly underscores the need for new food safety legislation to equip FDA with the tools we need to prevent contamination," said Dr. Jeff Farrar, associate commissioner for food safety, FDA's Office of Foods.

You know what else it underscores? How weirdly disgusting our food system is.

You should suggest to your local natural food stores and herb stores in RI that the legal status of stevia has changed recently. While importation of stevia was banned to protect Monsanto's NutraSweet sales and the future sales of other artificial sweeteners a few years ago, stevia can now be sold as a "dietary supplement." I have a copy of the FDA's new "Import Alert" on my Web page (or I can email it to you). Stevia products can and have been sold over the last few years as skin treatment products. Therefore, your local natural foods store should be able to get stevia skin treatment products and supplements from their distributor (or they should find a distributor who does sell it).

Stevia still cannot be legally sold as a "sweetener" by itself or in another product. This will help protect companies such as Monsanto (selling a dangerous artificial sweetener - aspartame) from having to compete against a safe, natural sweetener on a large-scale basis. But at least individuals can now use stevia as a supplement.

I'm kinda a probiotics pusher, lol.  (I'm with you, Pat...and for the natural ones~Windhorse)

There are some 500-1000 different microbials which inhabit and reproduce in the gut. Some are only there transiently and therefore, to have a "healthy" gut (based upon our historical traditional cultures), we need to consume beneficial microbials regularly. Whole food probiotics more effectively remain viable until they reach the large intestine. Most bottled probiotics are denatured during transportation, and don't survive the stomach acid to make it to the gut.

Also, the regular consumption of probiotics alters the ph in the gut, which impacts which microbials can survive and reproduce there. By consuming whole food probiotics (proper ph medium for surviving until they reach the large intestine, more microbial balance, etc.), we create an environment which is less hospitable for pathogenic bacteria. Btw, antibiotics DAMAGE the gut microbial balance by killing off the beneficial bacteria, which often leads to candida overgrowth and disrupted gut ph, and thus fewer beneficial bacteria and more pathogenic bacteria repopulating the gut.

Basically, most probiotics are not viable all the way to the gut, due to heat destruction during transportation and storage, acidity in the stomach, and low viability powders and capsules, and yogurts without billions of "Active Live Cultures".

Also, it is important to rotate probiotics otherwise "probiotic resistance" could develop, I've read. Don't use single strain probiotics exclusively; and DO rotate them every 4-7 days. Sacchromyces boulardii is a "good" yeast which lives in the gut longer and displaces candida. It is in kombucha.

I prefer whole foods which are naturally cultured or fermented: kefir or yogurt from cow, goat, coconut, almond, hemp seed milk, etc. And fermented foods. Bubbies brand sauerkraut and dill pickles are easy to add to the diet. Plus, kombucha, which actually displaces and replaces candida albicans in the large intestines---caution if you have or ever had any mercury (silver) fillings in your teeth.


"Homemade yogurt that is fermented for 24 hours, will have an average concentration of 3 billion cfu/mL of yogurt. If you were to eat a small bowl (500 ml) of 24 hour fermented homemade yogurt, you would receive 1.5 trillion beneficial bacteria - 100 times more bacteria than a 15 billion capsule.

Furthermore, freshly made kefir can have an average microbial count as high as 10 billion cfu/ml. This includes a mixture of various bacteria and yeast strains. This means that a 500 ml glass of homemade kefir could contain as many as 5 trillion beneficial microorganisms or even more!"
